چکیده

Introduction The advent of quantitative techniques based on the analyses of MRI structural data, such as Voxel-Based Morphometry (VBM) and volumetric analyses, has allowed a sensitive detection of regional patterns of grey matter (GM) and white matter (WM) volume loss with ageing (Sowell et al., 2003; Walhovd et al., 2005). More recently, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been used to quantify alterations in WM microstructure in the ageing brain (Salat et al., 2005). However, there is mixed evidence over the correspondence between changes detected using conventional volume or VBM measurements and DTI. The aim of this study was to determine the timing and spatial distribution of age-related changes using a range of volumetric and DTI-based measures.

Brain Structural Changes Caused by Autism Spectrum Disorder Based on Volumetric Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images: A Review Study

Background and purpose: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a psychiatric disorder which occurs in early years of life and causes various individual and social problems. Early detection of autism would help in taking necessary precautions and preventing its adverse side effects. Methods & Materials: In this paper, we reviewed the articles that have investigated brain structural changes caused by...

Do Teenagers Really Make Bad Decisions?

Scientific research provides evidence to show that a specific area of the human brain, known as the prefrontal cortex, continues to develop much longer than other brain regions. This area is involved in a number of complex functions and actions, including our decision-making abilities. As the areas involved in making decisions do not reach full maturity until early adulthood and undergo major s...

The Changes of Cerebral Morphology Related to Aging in Taiwanese Population

A cross-sectional study with the 3-dimensional (3D) MRI reconstruction technique was conducted to investigate cerebral complexity changes related to age differences in native Taiwanese population. In our sample of 85 participants aged between 25 and 81, age was associated with gradual ventricular expansion. A nonlinear quadratic relationship between white matter volume and age was found overall...

Diffusion tensor imaging of brain development.

Understanding early human brain development is of great clinical importance, as many neurological and neurobehavioral disorders have their origin in early structural and functional cerebral organization and maturation. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), a recent magnetic resonance (MR) modality which assesses water diffusion in biological tissues at a microstructural level, has revealed a powerful...

Dynamic reconfiguration of structural and functional connectivity across core neurocognitive brain networks with development.

Brain structural and functional development, throughout childhood and into adulthood, underlies the maturation of increasingly sophisticated cognitive abilities. High-level attentional and cognitive control processes rely on the integrity of, and dynamic interactions between, core neurocognitive networks. The right fronto-insular cortex (rFIC) is a critical component of a salience network (SN) ...
